Today (Thursday) racing finally come to a close in the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships 2006, with Great Britain winning their third medal in three years in the Hobie 16 class. |
The mid-week Around-the-Island Race was cancelled today at the New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex when no wind materialized before early afternoon. The 48-boat fleet, bobbing on Narragansett Bay atop glassy smooth water, starkly contrasted the previous four days of energetic sailing for Race Week's "first half," which included handicap racing for 66 boats in IRC, PHRF, Classics and 12 Metre classes. The Around-the-Island Race traditionally splits Race Week's first half from its second, which is devoted to one-design racing and begins tomorrow. The fleet will be 105 strong as North American Championships for the Beneteau First 36.7, Farr 395 and Farr 40 classes are sailed as well as the first-ever National Championship for the new Melges 32. Also sailing will be classes for J/105s, J/109s and Swan 45s. |
There is all to play for coming into the last day of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships, as the extremely variable weather caused many a place change. Discards are proving to be the major focus today as some classes have completed nine races giving them two discards to play with, while others are just on the cusp with only eight races completed, meaning they get just one discard. |
As well as the gold medals for individual excellence, a national battle is also underway this week at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Weymouth, Great Britain. The Volvo Trophy will be awarded to the best performing nation and with mere days until the closing ceremony, it is shaping up to be one of the closest run contests in recent years, with Australia just holding the advantage. |
In a heat wave, the New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex completed two final races for three IRC and three PHRF classes as well as a class for 12 Metres. This brought to a close the first four days of handicap racing that served as the Race Week's first half and hosted 66 entrants. Another hundred or so boats will join the competition during the second half, designated for one-design racing. That session starts Thursday, July 20, and will run for four days through Sunday, July 23. Splitting the handicap and one-design portions of Race Week is tomorrow's Around-the-Island Race, which is scored separately. |
Light winds plagued the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship on day five, with most of the sailors waiting for the fickle breeze to fill in outside the breakwater. When the breeze filled in, the RS:X class started the first of two races in front of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. |
Following a much needed day of rest, the Brits competing at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships arrived at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on Tuesday fighting fit and ready to race. |
Leads remained unchanged today in all classes competing in the first half of New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. It was a surprising scenario, since a steady building breeze throughout the day allowed for plenty of racing and chances to mix it up. |
Bright sunshine, warm temperatures and a festive atmosphere met sailors attending the lay day at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. With little wind blowing across the Weymouth and Portland waters, competitors were met with a host of activities with which to fill their day. |
The sunshine returned with a vengeance for the second day of the New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, but the wind struggled to gain even a fraction of the speed it showed on opening day Saturday. The 66 boats entered in the four-day handicap-racing segment of Race Week waited for an afternoon breeze, then made a hot and slow go of it in 2-6 knots of breeze that increased ever so slightly to reach a shifty 5-10 knots by day's end. A silver lining showed, however, in the scoring of two races for every class (three each for IRC and PHRF and a class each for Classics and 12 Metres). A total of 161 boats will have participated in Race Week by the end of next weekend when the regatta's second half is completed for additional competitors in several one-design classes. An Around-the-Island Race is scheduled for Wednesday to split the two sessions. |
