Major Championships Decided; Consistency Pays Off with Big Wins
Photo credit: Dan Nerney / RolexThe fifth biennial New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex hosted 168 boats over nine straight days with a variety of competitive sailing choices. The event's unique split-racing format makes it a popular draw, allowing sailors to customize their competitive experience in three different formats: handicap racing, one design racing and optional distance racing held on an mid-week day. The handicap racing session in the first half of the week (July 15-18) hosted 66 boats in three IRC and three PHRF classes as well as in separate classes for Classics and 12 Meters. In the second session (July 20-23) for one-design racing, 102 boats competed in seven classes with major championships determined in the Beneteau First 36.7, Farr 395, Farr 40 and the J/109 classes (North American Championships) and the Melges 32 class (National Championship).

Skandia Cowes Week – Day 3 Round-up Report 31/07/06
Copyright onEdition 2006The town of Cowes turned blue on day three of Skandia Cowes Week as the official charity of the regatta, the Ellen MacArthur Trust, encouraged competitors and spectators to dress up in blue to raise money for this fabulous charity that aims to get sick children between the age of 8 and 18 on the water as part of their recovery. On the water however, the language was certainly blue for some classes as yachts short-tacked up the Green, fighting for favourable tide and clear air after their starts on a day that saw gusts above 25 knots as rain clouds brought increased pressure from the south-west. Tales of wild broaches, prolonged surfs, broken masts, near sinkings and man overboard incidents dominated the bar talk throughout the evening as the gusty conditions proved to be a real test of boat handling ability across the 935 competing yachts.

Skandia Cowes Week – Day 2 Round-up Report 30/07/06
Image‘Champagne sailing’ were the words most commonly heard in the bars and yacht clubs of Cowes as day two delivered stunning racing conditions, clear skies and a gusty breeze that topped 20 knots throughout the afternoon. However the Laser SB3’s were drowning their sorrows shoreside as two general recalls resulted in Principal Race Officer Malcolm McKeag having to take the difficult decision to abandon the class for the day to ensure no further disruption to the lengthy starting sequence on the inshore White Group line.

Skandia Cowes Week – Day 1 Round-up Report 29/07/06
Copyright onEdition 2006The 180th Skandia Cowes Week Regatta got underway today amidst changing conditions as an occluded front swept eastwards across the British Isles testing the record fleet of 1,028 yachts across some 37 classes. The morning started with hazy sunshine breaking through mild cloud cover with winds gusting to a fresh force three but as the afternoon wore on, and the majority of boats hit the mid point of their races, rain clouds covered the Solent and stiffening winds blew the early cobwebs away and produced some thrilling racing.

One Design Winners Decided - FINAL
Photo credit: Daniel Forster / RolexFor the over 700 sailors who competed this week at New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, today's final races were an ideal ending to a perfect regatta. A variety of boats, nationalities and sailors were represented across seven one-design classes, where North American championships were determined in the Beneteau First 36.7, Farr 40 and J/109 classes. Additionally, those three winning skippers were also awarded a Rolex Steel Submariner timepiece for their overall performance: Takashi Okura (Tokyo, Japan) in the Farr 40 class; Tom D'Albora (E. Greenwich, R.I.) in the Beneteau 36.7 class; and Jon Halbert (Dallas, Texas) in the J/109 class.

Light Wind Morning Turns Challenging for Competitors
Photo credit: Daniel Forster / RolexLead changes and tight racing continue to characterize the action in all seven one-design classes at New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. Although the early morning conditions led the Race Committee to postpone racing for one hour, once the 102 boat fleet got out to Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, the wind had picked up to 13-15 knots. Two races were held for the Swan 45, Farr 40, Melges 32, Farr 395 and J/109 classes, while three races were held for the Beneteau 36.7 and J/105 classes.

Leaders Emerge on Second Day
Photo credit: Daniel Forster / Rolex"We couldn't have had a better day," said Tom Coates about today's racing on Rhode Island Sound during New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. As he did at this event in 2004, Coates with his Masquerade took an early lead in the competitive J/105 class; he won all three of today's races. Known around New England as an accomplished sailor, he also is known on his home waters of San Francisco Bay for his success in the same class. His secret weapon, however, appears to be tactician Chris Perkins noted by many as the hottest J/105 sailor on the planet for his multiple class titles including one at Rolex Big Boat Series that led to being named St Francis Yacht Club's Yachtsman of the Year.
