Flash Gordon was firing on all cylinders today while other leading lights stalled out during a tricky opening day at the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island. The formula for Flash Gordon's success includes world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn (Chicago, Ill.) steering his Flash Gordon upwind, then handing over to his son Evan downwind. An unorthodox approach, but one that did them no harm in the light south-westerly breeze that blew across Rhode Island Sound. |
Alfa Romeo consolidates its lead in Racing division, Morning Glory sits in second. Roma, Aleph, Hetairos & Magic Carpet2 lead their divisions. |
A 30-mile almost complete circumnavigation of the Archipelago de La Maddalena, with a light north easterly breeze of 7-9 knots, was the feature of the second day of the 2006 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. |
For some this is the most nerve-wracking time, the final days building up to the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. Some of the 38 teams gathered in Newport, Rhode Island, have been taking time off to relax, while others have been getting in some last-minute practice. There is no doubting the intensity of preparations, a little too intense for Ramrod earlier today, as Rod Jabin's (Annapolis, Md.) boat got broadsided by another Farr 40 in some close-quarters boat-to-boat maneuvering that got too close. This will keep the crew busy getting the boat repaired in time for the first race on Wednesday morning. |
The 17th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda kicked off today with a record fleet of 46 yachts and beautiful sailing conditions. A light northeasterly breeze of 8-10 knots, flat seas and warm sun were the feature of the day. |

The crystal-clear waters of the Costa Smeralda, the world renowned sailors' paradise, is set to host one of the most impressive gatherings of sailing yachts ever. This year's line-up smashes the 2005 record of 37 yachts and, once again, has brought the elite of the international sailing and business worlds to Porto Cervo. |
"Hopefully we didn't jinx ourselves, but I think every time you go out to race you've got to go out to win," said Terry Hutchinson, after a hair-raising, but exhilarating day of racing that led to Jim Richardson's Barking Mad (Boston, Mass./Newport, R.I.) winning the Belle Mer Farr 40 Pre-Worlds Regatta. Barking Mad sits in pole position going into the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship this week in Newport, Rhode Island, following a solid performance on the second and concluding day. |
After three races on Day 1 of the Belle Mer Farr 40 Pre-Worlds Regatta, no one is any clearer about who will win the forthcoming Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. At the end of the day it was the defending World Champion from Australia, Richard Perini and his Evolution that held a one-point lead over the 2004 World Champion, local sailor Jim Richardson and his team on the brand-new Barking Mad. However, no one team dominated the day, with Evolution leading on scores of 25 points (3-16-6) and Barking Mad on 26 points (18-1-7). |
