Tricky Conditions for Classic Fleets' First Day of Racing

Over 100 boats in six classes set out for the starting line in the Bay of Saint-Tropez with the pastel-hued town providing a picturesque backdrop.

St. Francis Yacht Club awards its six Perpetual Trophies at Rolex Big Boat Series - Final
Photo by: Sharon Green / RolexAt this evening's Rolex Award Ceremony, six skippers were awarded the St. Francis Yacht Club's six Perpetual Trophies, earned for success in each of six racing classes during the Rolex Big Boat Series. Today's final race - the Bay Tour, ranging from 14.21 to 15.44 nautical miles for the two divisions - concluded the 42nd annual regatta. Each of the six Perpetual Trophy winners also was presented with Rolex Steel Submariner timepieces in recognition of their accomplishments.

Rolex Big Boat Series - Day 3 Report
Photo by: Sharon Green / RolexDespite a light-wind start to the third day of racing at Rolex Big Boat Series, the St. Francis Yacht Club's (StFYC) race committee managed to complete two challenging races for the 900-plus sailors competing here. The breeze built while racers waited on San Francisco Bay, finally materializing in the 12-15 knot range. The StFYC will award its six Perpetual Trophies after tomorrow's final Bay Tour Race, the traditional end for the seven-race, four-day regatta.

"This is what we live for," said Andy Costello (Novato, Calif.), skipper of the 1D35 Double Trouble, currently leading its class with four straight wins in as many races. "We saw 25-28 knots plus and some puffs to 30 knots. The wind has been a lot of fun; the boat likes the breeze. Our boat speed is definitely a little bit faster than the others."
 
Leaders Prove Unmoved by Strong Winds

Rolex Big Boat Series - Day 1 Report
Photo credit: Daniel Forster / RolexThe Rolex Big Boat Series is known by sailors around the world for two things: superlative race management by host St. Francis Yacht Club and the consistent double-digit wind speeds on San Francisco Bay. Today's racing didn't disappoint the 900-plus sailors who have come to experience the traditionally exceptional racing, wind speeds ranged from 10 knots on the lighter areas of the course to 22-28 knots in the gustier areas, close to shore and the city front. Eight classes - three IRC and five one-design - raced two races each.
 
Monsoon Jaguar Weathers the Storm
Photo by: Carlo Borlenghi/ RolexAfter three days of racing Peter Simon's Monsoon Jaguar has yet to be beaten on the water, with the British entry claiming line honours for the third successive race. The Swan 65, sistership of Sayula II, the Swan that won the first ever Whitbread, was the first boat to return home to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda after the long distance race.
