Ericsson Struts her Stuff
©2006 David BraniganAfter hugging the shore to avoid foul tide for much of the 23 hours since leg eight of the Volvo Ocean Race began in Portsmouth, the whole fleet is now approaching The Lizard and Ericsson (Neal McDonald), the leading boat, has just 13 miles to go. This is not a scoring gate on this leg, so no points to be gained by arriving here first, but psychologically, this will be good for McDonald and his crew.

On Tuesday BMW ORACLE Racing won Act 10, when it was determined it would win the four way tie-break scenario at the top of the table. With today's win the Americans are one point clear, their only loss coming to Alinghi.
 
Bye bye London
Trimarans at the foot of Tower BridgeAfter a day marked by the spectacle of the six trimarans entered in the 'Londres-Alpes-Maritimes' yacht race – between the parade and the prologue – the fleet of marine birds spread their wings and set flight on their voyage. Time to get down to the business of racing. The start of the first race in the Multi Cup Cafe Ambassador championship got underway on the River Thames. At 17h09 (French time), in a S-SW wind of 8-10 knots, Groupama 2 (Franck Cammas) was the fastest boat of the mark, followed by Banque Populaire (Pascal Bidégorry) and Géant (Michel Desjoyeaux). 


 
Gipsy Moth IV Team Look to the Future
ImageIn less than a week since Gipsy Moth IV ran aground on a remote Atoll between the Marquesas Islands and Tahiti, the vessel has been successfully re-floated and towed to safety where detailed inspections of the damage sustained and initial repairs can begin.

Long term savings group and title sponsor, Skandia, is looking for crews to represent four different regions of the UK as part of the Skandia Squad which will race at this year’s event (29th July – 5th August). Expert sailing knowledge is not required as fully qualified instructors from the United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA) will sail with the crews over the eight days of the regatta.
