Brian Thompson and the Artemis Ocean Racing Team today officially launched ‘Artemis’ the state of the art Open 60 racing yacht at the Ocean Terminal in Leith, Scotland, the home of ‘Artemis Ocean Racing’. Artemis, one of the UK’s leading investment companies announced their innovative sponsorship of Brian Thompson in July, and welcomes Brian and his team to Scotland for the first time. Thompson, 44, is a vastly experienced and incredibly successful offshore racing sailor. Having raced professionally for over twelve years, Brian has 25 world records to date and has clocked up more multihull and swing keel miles than any other Briton. In delivering the boat from Southampton to Edinburgh for today’s event, Brian successfully qualified for the Route du Rhum, which starts on 29th October in St Malo and finishes in Guadeloupe. Thompson will be the only British competitor in his class in the event, which is one of the most established single-handed transatlantic races in the world. The race has been contested every four years since 1978 and takes the fleet of 13 Open 60’s on a 3510 mile dash across the Atlantic. At today’s launch in Leith, attended by customers and clients of Artemis, Brian commented: ““It is great to be here in Edinburgh, we will carry the ‘Leith’ name around the world as it is our home port, so the team is delighted to come up here and officially launch the boat in Scottish waters. By sailing up here I have also now qualified for the Route du Rhum which starts in October so this is a really good day for us. I am extremely excited to have the chance to sail ‘Artemis’ at the highest level – it is a great boat and I am very grateful to Artemis for this fantastic opportunity.” Richard Turpin of Artemis commented: “Becoming involved in sailing through sponsoring Brian Thompson has been an exciting new project for Artemis. Brian represents qualities of experience, skill, flair and determination, which we believe reflect Artemis’ qualities in the financial markets. We are delighted to welcome Brian and the team to Leith. Brian is a hugely impressive individual, and we wish him the best of luck in his final preparations for the coming Route du Rhum race.” In addition to the ocean racing programme, Artemis is also supporting boat builders Vizual Marine, based in Chichester, with the development of a new boat, to be called the ‘Artemis 20’, which can be sailed by disabled and able bodied sailors alike. The intention is to achieve paralympic status for the class by the 2012 games and the boat will be launched at the Southampton Boat Show later this month.
