ImagePeters Opal will announce the European Launch of the new Island Packet SP Cruiser at the 2007 London Boat Show.  Island Packet, USA has designed this new cruising model with inspiration from motorsailer styles.  With forward and aft cockpits, additional deck house and new hull design the SP Cruiser will offer modern style cruising at an impressive price for a 12 metre yacht.

The SP Cruiser results from decades of study into the motorsailer style and realisation that the sailing market is seeking home comforts and motoring qualities while retaining the ability to make passage under sail with simplified, easy to control systems.  The rig is geared to ease of handling, a simplified roller furling sloop rig with sail controls leading to the aft cockpit and a second optional roller furling headsail forward of the jib allows for use of a large reaching sail.
 
The SP Cruiser’s sloop rig is a departure from Island Packet’s standard Hoyt Boom cutter rig.  With a self tending jib and sail control console located in the aft cockpit leading all sheet, furler and outhaul lines to a single electric winch, sailing the SP Cruiser is undemanding and comfortable.
 
The helm benefits from an optional auto pilot providing the ability to steer the boat from virtually any location with a wireless handheld control.
 
A key difference in the SP Cruiser from Island Packet’s traditional designs is the new hull form.  The signature Island Packet Full Foil Keel with double bottomed protection has been retained, but the SP Cruiser’s broader stern sections, with a flatter run and less deadrise, increase performance under power.
 
Capable of extended passages under power with its large fuel tank providing economical fuel consumption, the SP Cruiser’s performance can be augmented with use of sails, increasing speed and/or reducing fuel usage.
 
Accommodation below decks is remarkable for a yacht of 12 metres.  A bright and very attractive décor has been created by combining natural surfaces and varnished hardwood.
