ABN Amro One to Compete in Rolex Sydney–Hobart Race PDF Print E-mail
© ROLEX/Kurt Arrigo - www.abnamro.com/teamABN AMRO ONE, the winner of the 2005-6 Volvo Ocean Race will sail in the 2006 Rolex Sydney–Hobart Yacht Race, it was announced today. The  race,  which  starts  in  Sydney  Harbour  on  the 26th December, is a world-class  event, attracting some of the greatest names of yacht racing. In Australia’s sporting calendar it ranks alongside cricket, tennis and the Melbourne Cup horse racing.

Kiwi, Mike Sanderson, who also skippered the boat to victory in the Volvo Ocean Race, will be joined by a combination of sailors from the whole ABN AMRO team.   This includes Australians Nick Bice (ABN AMRO TWO), Neil Cox (ABN AMRO shore crew), Phil Harmer and fellow kiwis Brad Jackson (ABN AMRO ONE), Scott Beavis (ABN AMRO TWO) and Matt Stechmann (ABN AMRO shore crew)

Mike Sanderson commented:  “It is great for us to be back on this side of the world with ABN AMRO ONE.  This is a fantastic event and it will be great to get out on the water and let the boat get back in her stride.  I think we may well be due for a blowy race, so it could be very interesting – it is always good to get a fleet of big boats offshore in the conditions they were made for and race against each other.  I am looking forward to it.”

Angus James, CEO of ABN AMRO Australia said: “We are delighted to welcome ABN AMRO ONE back to Australia to compete in the Sydney–Hobart Yacht Race.  Mike is a world-class skipper, as ABN AMRO ONE's victory in the Volvo Ocean Race demonstrated. The maxis will be tough competition but the V70 is up to the challenge - ABN AMRO is proud to be associated with this boat and crew."

The historic event, in its 62nd year has a reputation and long history unequalled by any other yearly yacht race.  The course takes the fleet out of  the  spectacular  Sydney  Harbour  and  then  down  the  East  Coast of Australia, across the Bass Strait finishing in Hobart, Tasmania.

The crew on board the boat have their sights firmly on line honours and a race record if the conditions suit the wide-transom, ABN AMRO ONE.  The current race record is held by Wild Oats for completing the course in 1 day, 18 hours, 14 minutes and 10 seconds.
