The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, venue for the London 2012 Olympic sailing competition, has played host to the sailors representing 63 nations for the past week in what has been the largest ever ISAF Youth Worlds in the 35 year history of the event. Eddie Ramsden, Chairman of the Royal Yachting Association, the body that organised the event on behalf of the International Sailing Federation, praised the event organisers, volunteers, race officials and sponsors for staging a fantastic event. Ramsden also spoke to the competitors. “I would like to thank you for the good humour and fellowship you have developed and shown this week in your sport and I hope that you can all come back to Great Britain to sail again soon.” The gold, silver and bronze medallists in the seven classes represented sailors from 16 separate nations. Following the individual medal presentations, the Volvo Trophy presented for the best team competing at the event was then awarded to Italy for the first time by Hugh Reid, Managing Director of Volvo Cars UK. Italy becomes only the fifth nation to ever win the Volvo Trophy. The elated Italian team all sang together as their national anthem played. Following the medal presentations, Fiona Kidd, Chairman of the Youth Championship committee of the International Sailing Federation praised Volvo, the event’s title sponsors for helping to make the event possible. Kidd also showed gratitude to the Royal Yachting Association for hosting a successful event. “This has been the largest and best event, and I have to say best ever, youth championships to date. All of the competitors came here as winners and will go home as winners and I hope you are all pound of your achievements.” Regatta Chairman, John Friend was the last to speak before handing the ISAF flag to Tim Brown, Chief Executive of the Canadian Yachting Association who will be hosting the event in 2007. “All good things must come to an end and all good ends lead to good beginnings. May you all remember the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships 2006 with fondness and affection for years to come.” As the ceremony came to a close competitors said their final goodbyes. Some have competed here for the last time before moving into senior level competition, some will compete again in 2007, but all have sailed their hardest at this competition and all have made their nations proud.
