Clipper Race Abandoned PDF Print E-mail
ImageAll 10 yachts in the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race have been diverted to Subic Bay in the Philippines for keel inspection. This is following discovery of loose keel bolts on Glasgow, one of the 10 Clipper 68 yachts in the race, on Saturday morning (4/2/06). After this, the race team immediately advised all other vessels in the fleet to check their bolts for movement.

After carrying out an inspection it was reported that seven out of the 10 yachts showed slight movement in their keel bolts. The decision was then made to divert the fleet to nearest landfall in the Philippines. For a full investigation and for any necessary remedial work to be carried out.

Clipper Ventures PLC, the race organisers, have emphasised that there is no immediate risk to any of the yachts or competitors, and that this decision has been taken as a precautionary measure, given that crew safety is paramount in the organisation of the Race.

Durban and Victoria arrived at the Subic Bay Yacht Club at around 0700 GMT on Sunday. New York, Jersey, Liverpool 08, westernaustralia.com and Cardiff have arrived throughout the day and the remaining three boats (Uniquely Singapore, Glasgow and Qingdao) are expected between 0300-0600 GMT on Monday 6 February.

Durban Skipper Craig Millar is investigating haul-out facilities and work will commence as soon as possible on ascertaining the full extent of the problem. Only at that point will Clipper be able to determine what remedial action needs to be taken. They will be working to minimise disruption to the race.
