Saturday October 14 will see the skippers of the VELUX 5 OCEANS battling against each other in a special inshore regatta off the coast of Bilbao, the Basque Country. With just over a week to go before these intrepid heroes set off on their solo voyage around the world, the people of Bilbao and the surrounding region will get to see the power and speed of the high performance Open 60s up close. Kicking off at 13:00 local time, the yachts will race with full crews around a course set off the cliffs of Bizkaia in the “Bay of Biscay Regatta” hosted by the City of Bilbao and the Club Maritimo Del Abra. |
The eight skippers who are taking part in the original around the world solo race have just finished a survival and security course given by CEPIM in Bilbao. The French sailor Yves le Blevec, with the fire-safety expert Henry Monet tried to familiarize the skippers with the reflexes they should have in an emergency. Some of these automatic responses may be crucial in their survival at the sea. |

Oban Marina Ltd announced today a change of name for Oban Yachts marina based on the Isle of Kerrera close to Oban on the West Coast of Scotland. The marina will now be known as Oban Marina and phase one of the long term development plan to upgrade the site has been successfully completed on time. |

The show began today in Saint-Tropez for the 8th edition of 'Les Voiles' formerly known as La Nioulargue and first held in 1981. Today saw the start of racing for the Modern division, a competitive mix of boats including Swans, Beneteaus, and Wally Yachts. The 'moderns' ranges in size from the 9m (30') J/92 J'Go to the stunning 42m (140') schooner, Mari-Cha IV, which last year broke the 100-year old transatlantic race record and took line honours in the Rolex Translantic Challenge. Racing for the 'Tradition' class begins tomorrow at noon; racing for all classes continues until Saturday. |
With just 23 days to go until the start, the eight skippers competing in the VELUX 5 OCEANS are making their way to the startline of the world’s toughest sporting event. The gruelling 30,000 mile race begins in Bilbao on the 22nd October, and the sailors will not return until April 2007, having circumnavigated the planet alone. |
