Recently a friend of mine asked me for advice on buying a boat, and as we're expanding our Yachts for Sale section over the coming months, I thought I should also cover the basics on the site as well. |
It has now passed into legend, a sort of nautical urban myth, about the live aboard yachtsman in the West Country who had to pay full council tax for his swinging mooring. For those of you who have abandoned the land as a bad idea, let me enlighten you as to the in an outs of local government taxation. |
Early the other morning my slumber was disturbed by the dawn chorus of a wailing smoke alarm. I awoke to find my main cabin filled with smoke, and a soft warm glow coming from the corner. On closer examination I discovered that the wiring on my 12v socket had shorted and caught fire (in case you hadn't guessed, this isn't an article about the joy of solid fuel heating!). Luckily I caught it before it spread to any of the other wonderful combustibles on the boat, like the collection of aerosols and engine lubricants stored nearby, in the end all that was destroyed was several inches of wiring and the socket. |
Clocks went back a month ago, so it’s that time of year again when you part-timers have your pride and joy dragged out, her bottom scrubbed, and painted up to look good. No I’m not talking about taking your partner to the office Christmas party, I’m talking about haul out and lay up. My preference is to sail in the winter and haul out around Cowes week, thus I have some room to manoeuvre on the Solent. However for the traditionalists amongst you may I throw in a couple of reminders. |
One of the most important things when choosing equipment for you boat is reliability, you want things that you can depend on, that when it comes to the crunch won't let you down. |
For those of you who have not noticed, we at GoneSailing like to think of ourselves as have a go merchants. Sailing is an acquired art, there are natural born yachtsmen/women sure, I know plenty. But you would be surprised on the number of salts who can circumnavigate the globe but still take a chunk out of the pontoon when coming into berth, or at the very least break into a sweat going to the fuel dock. And conversely those who can, as gently as you like, nudge up a sixty footer to the quayside but couldn’t navigate their way round a large cheese sandwich without GPS. |
There are many direct and indirect ways into the watersports industry over the next few months we will be looking at career paths, training, and individual employers. With insight from training providers and employers directly. |
Sailing is Britain’s most successful Olympic sport with 5 medals claimed in the last Games, but when it comes to reaching a wide audience, it doesn’t do nearly so well. Part of the reason, and probably the largest factor is the sheer cost of buying and maintaining a boat. There are undoubtedly many who would love to get involved but simply cannot afford it. |
