RNLI Top Tip - Tell Someone Where You Are Going! PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea, is releasing detailed advice at regular intervals that expands on each of its five top safety tips to keep you and your family safe at sea over the summer:

· Always wear a lifejacket
· Check your engine and fuel
· Tell others where you are going
· Carry some means of calling for help
· Keep an eye on weather and tides

The third of the five tips to be highlighted is:

'Tell others where you are going'

Many RNLI lifeboat call-outs and searches can be speeded up and possibly more lives saved if the lifeboat volunteers have a good idea on where to start searching when someone goes missing. This can be done easily by leaving your trip details with someone ashore.

· Where you are going.
· When you'll be back.
· Any other details such as what type of boat and how many people are onboard.
· Give the coastguard your trip details.
· Sign up to coastguard safety schemes such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) CG66 or Irish Coast Guard (IRCG) Yacht and Boat Safety Scheme, which are free and easy to join by accessing their websites or by using the RNLI Sea Safety Complete Guide CD-ROM.

RNLI Top tips

RNLI Sea Safety Manager, Peter Chennell says:

'Even the most experienced boaters can get into trouble so take five minutes to tell someone before you go where you are going and when to expect you back. Passing on this simple piece of information costs nothing and could very easily save your life and others on your boat.'

'We would urge people to contact the charity for free impartial sea safety information and the recently launched 'Sea Safety The Complete Guide'. Please contact us on freephone 0800 328 0600, or by email on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or visit www.rnli.org.uk/seasafety. The RNLI is always glad to help, but we'd rather people asked for it when they're on dry land rather than when they're 'all at sea'.

He adds:

'We all think that it won't happen to us but last year many thousands of boaters, both experienced and novice, had to think again.'

The summer holiday is traditionally the busiest time for RNLI volunteers as boat owner's head for the coast. *Over the summer period last year, RNLI lifeboats launched 3,981 times and rescued 4,335 people in distress.
