RNLI Releases Second Top Tip to Keep You and Your Family Safe by The Sea This Summer PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea has released the second in the series of detailed advice expanding on each of the five top safety tips that you and your family can count on this summer:

1. Always wear a lifejacket
2. Check your engine and fuel
3. Tell others where you are going
4. Carry some means of calling for help
5. Keep an eye on weather and tides

Number two of the five tips to be highlighted is:

Check your engine and fuel

Over 60% of RNLI call-outs are to craft whose engines have broken down for a variety of reasons. You can help reduce this statistic and enjoy your boating even further by taking some very simple advice:

*    Never rely on your boat's fuel gauge and carry enough fuel for your journey.  Allow about 1/3 of the tank as spare for any unforeseen events.
*    Know your engine and take appropriate tools and spares for the common maintenance areas.
*    Go through pre-start checks and attend to any problems before you go out.  See our engine checklist card on the RNLI sea safety website www.rnli.org.uk/seasafety for further details.
*    Have an alternative means of propulsion
*    Paddles/Oars
*    Spare engine
*    Wear your kill cord, check it works and carry a spare.

RNLI Top Tips

* Know how to anchor in case of a breakdown to stop you drifting.  All the anchoring information you will ever need is in the RNLI's new complete guide to sea safety which can be obtained through the website or by telephoning 08451 226999.
* Know how to rig your boat for a tow and also be able to tow if you see someone in difficulty.

RNLI Sea Safety Manager, Peter Chennell says:

'Many incidents can be prevented with some basic safety knowledge so we would urge people to follow our safety advice.  Everyone thinks that it won't happen to them but last year many thousands both experienced and novice alike, had to think again as the RNLI lifeboats launched a total of 3,981 times over the *summer, rescuing 4,335 people in distress.'

'All this costs money and many boat users choose to support the charity and its volunteers by donations or becoming an Offshore Member. Offshore membership is designed specifically for those most likely to need the services of the RNLI - the sea-going community. Offshore members are kept up to date on essential sea safety advice and receive special offers and discounts. In addition to the Lifeboat magazine, they receive their own publication, Offshore News, three times a year. For further information call 0800 543210 and the RNLI encourages boat users to join.'

'The RNLI's annual running costs are around £120.2M - approximately £330,000 per day - and, as a registered charity, the organisation continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for income, and receives no UK central Government funding.'
